In all honesty I prefer to write longer pieces than a few snippets of words but much has changed on that front since Donald Trump started to use twitter as his press centre and the shindig that we call Brexit divided the UK. I enjoy following Trumps ramblings. He is clearly king of the pile for self centred awareness and his statement are more a kin to a kindergarten than the White House. However it’s impossible to deny that his diatribes grab the maximum attention and subsequently help drive this maelstrom of division and falsehoods that the world appears immersed in. Its dangerous as while everyone’s heads are turned by Trumps threat of sanctions, walls or wailing dervishs, there’s some pretty bad shit going on in the world which just continues to seep through unnoticed fuelled by his rhetoric. Nationalism and populist politics now appear to be becoming the norm and subjugation is reaching open season and everyone is just staring blankly at it with eyes wide shut. Just take a look at the map of the world. Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya muslims is bordering on genocide, whilst China’s treatment of their own muslim minority the Uighurs, resembles a dystopian hell. Throw in Duterte’s terror in the Philippines, Bolsonaro burning the Amazon and Modi stamping his authority on Kashmir and you can see we are in a cluster fuck of a situation and that’s without even bringing up the middle east, Crimea and every other bit of nastiness corrupting this world. Which brings me full circle back to Twitter, Trump, Brexit and why things are going to get worse before they get better. I’ve never been one to shy away from an argument and am opinionated like the next. Ive found the recent upheaval in politics facinating especially since Boris bludgeoned his way through the door to No 10. For the record I voted remain but accept we should honour the vote of the referendum. I don’t fall for all the mud slinging about getting lied too or being misinformed – we knew what we were voting for. However, I do not agree that we should exit Europe without a deal and do not believe the Government statements that a Britain free of Europe’s chains will be a utopia of wine and roses – far from it. However the breakdown in any form of consensus which appears to have inflicted us all has serious repercussions in how we move forward in the future. The bile dished out on social media by the likes of Katie Hopkins and others has been extraordinary and unlikely to be forgotten. I abhor the dirty mud slinging. The use of the words or sentences ‘Traitor’ and ‘Drain the swamp’ and all its connotations just encourages hate and further division which in the long run helps no-one. Depicting Britain in a bygone era when it ruled the waves is also long gone – surely we’ve moved on, but apparently not as insidious commentators fuel the fires of Brexit by false promises of grandeur. Like many places in the world we are in danger of sliding down that populist path, driven by the demagogues with their polluting output. Only a rational consensus built on respect and acknowledgment can pull us back from the brink otherwise we face a future of uncertainty, continued mistrust and years of treading water in the stagnated swamp.
